Didier de Radiguès will ride a Lucky Strike Suzuki at this year's Bikers' Classics. The 56-year-old Belgian sported the colours of the Suzuki factory team in 1991.
The first weekend of July de Radiguès will ride Kevin Schwantz's 1994 RGV500 that the Texan star took to fourth in the 500cc World Championship. Schwantz won two Grands Prix that year. The 498cc Factory XR94 has one proud owner, Suzuki collector Steve Wheatman. The British business man has been bringing wonderfully prepared Suzuki’s to the Bikers' Classics at Spa-Francorchamps for many years now. In celebration of Suzuki's introduction of the RG500 forty years ago this year, Wheatman is offering the ride on the ex Schwantz machine to Didier de Radiguès, Belgian's most successful roadracer of all time. De Radiguès spent six years in the 500cc class on various brands. In 1991 he returned to the 'Class of Kings' following two years in the 250 class after signing a deal with the Lucky Strike Suzuki Racing Team as teammate to Schwantz. Didier finished eighth in the championship that year - fifth place at the Dutch TT in Assen was his best result.
De Radiguès has a special relationship with the Spa-Francorchamps track. Besides winning the Spa 24 Hours on four wheels, he also enjoyed some great successes on the undulating circuit in the Ardennes. In 1983 he won his home race on a 250cc Chevallier, beating Christian Sarron. It was to be the last Grand Prix win of a Belgian racer. That season de Radiguès took third in the final standings, having finished runner-up in the 350cc class in the previous year. In 1990 Didier once more came close to winning the Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, finishing second in the 250 class.
At the 2014 Bikers' Classics de Radiguès will once more be reunited with a powerful Suzuki RGV500, a true masterpiece on two wheels. The bike may be 20 years old by now but the liquid-cooled V4 still managed to impress guest-rider Scott Redding at the 2013 Bikers' Classics. Getting back on the screaming Lucky Strike Suzuki two-stroke will surely bring back old memories to de Radiguès – and probably not just to the rider. Therefore, watching 'Belgian's Best' at Spa-Francorchamps promises to be a great treat at the Bikers' Classics from July 4th- 6th.
